Faith is a notoriously difficult thing to master; after all it’s only human nature for our beliefs to be accompanied by doubts at times. And sometimes terrible things can happen to wonderful people almost entirely out of nowhere, testing both our faith and our resolve. In fact, one of the most difficult aspects of coping with terminal illnesses like cancer can be how it can seem as though they strike, out of the blue, directly at those that we love and care for without any real discernable rhyme of reason. This sudden wreckage can make it difficult to move past the sense of unfairness, or even anger, and seriously test our faith. In particular cancers with low survival rates and low life expectancies like renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer, or pericardial mesothelioma, a cancer in the tissue lining the heart, can strike suddenly and violently with little warning and leave our faith deeply shaken.
But in these moments of doubts, clouded over by a cancer diagnosis, faith can be exactly what cancer patients’ need. Although there are reported cases of tumor regression singularly because of faith and prayer, it is generally believed that they alone are not a significantly effective cancer treatment. However, recent studies by the American Cancer Society have shown that using prayer as a complementary treatment may be quite effective. Several studies of advanced cancer patients revealed that those who reported being concerned with faith and spiritual well-being were able to cope more effectively, while research in San Francisco found that heart patients who were prayed for had fewer complications.
As such, while it seems highly unlikely that it any carcinoma or mesothelioma doctors will be prescribing faith as a medicine anytime, it’s getting increasingly difficult to deny the power that faith can have to help the healing process. So in those terrible moments where it seems that there is no reason to have faith that holding onto your faith could be helping to heal you.

This thorough guide is a must-read for cancer patients and their families seeking treatment options.
