Scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have discovered how two cancer-promoting genes enhance a tumors capacity to grow and survive under conditions where normal cells die. The knowledge, they say, may offer new treatments that starve cancer cells of a key nutrient – sugar. However, the scientists caution that research does not suggest that altering dietary sugar will make any difference in the growth and development of cancer.

Our body is a complex system. It consists of many parts of the body that supporting to each other. To support our life, the body has several important systems such as blood system and also digestive system. Blood system is the circulation of blood stream to the whole body to carry nutritious food and also oxygen. The blood also used to waste and unimportant materials from the body such as poison and many other. The digestive system is a system that processes food into nutritious element for our body. The digestive system is started on the mouth. The teeth crush the food into small chunks. The mouth also mixes the food with saliva that can help the digesting process. The saliva is needed in the process of swallowing the food. Moreover, the saliva contains enzymes that are important in turning the food into nutritious materials. After the food is swallowed, it comes to the colon.

The colon is the part of the digestive system that has duty to absorb the nutritious materials. It has many tiny blood vessels that can absorb the nutritious materials and then deliver it to the whole body. Colon is also place where the waste is stored. On the end of the colon, there is a rectum. Rectum is the end of the colon and adjacent to the anus. Colon and rectum form long muscular tube called the large intestine or the large bowel. This is the dirtiest part of the body because all solid wastes are stored here. Since it is the dirtiest place, there are many caches that diseases occur in this place. The most common disease in this place is cancer or tumor. Colon cancer or tumors of the colon and rectum are growth arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. When the tumor is not dangerous, it is called polyps. When the polyps become dangerous and out of control, It is called cancer. The differences between those two tumors are the benign tumors do not invade tissue around it or spread to the other part of the body through blood stream. Moreover, this kind of tumor is removable using small surgery called colonoscopy. Benign tumor is not dangerous to our life.

When these benign polyps are not removed as soon as possible, it can turn into malignant over time. When the polyps turn into cancer, your life is in danger. Most doctors believe that all colon cancer is developed from un-removed polyps. This tumor is called colon cancer or the colorectal cancer. As any other cancers do, this cancer can spread away. It can break away and spread to other parts of the body (such as liver and lung). To prevent colon cancer, it is better to remove the polyps as soon as possible through small surgery.

There are several known factors that increase the risk of a person developing colon cancer. These factors can be split into two categories: the ones that you can have control over and the second category those that you have no control over.

What you eat can make a difference in developing colon cancer. As you can see, this is a factor that we have some control over. Studies have shown that eating fat or fatty foods increases the risk of developing colon cancer. Furthermore, if your diet does not contain the necessary amount of fiber, then you are at risk of developing colon cancer as well. So, believe it or not, diet is a factor when talking about colon cancer. You should try to avoid those foods that have a lot of fat in them, although I know they are so tasty. If you care about your health and also want to lower the risk of colon cancer, you will!

Environment is also another risk factor for colon cancer. You can say that this factor is somewhere between those two categories. Studies have shown that people that live in industrialized countries are more at risk of developing colon cancer. The actual cause of getting colon cancer is not known, but because the majority of people that suffer from colon cancer live in these areas, then you can safely say that environment is one of the risk factors.

Age is also a risk factor when it comes to colon cancer. Unfortunately, we have no control over this factor. This is probably one of the most important factors in developing colon cancer. Because we have no control over it, all we can do is try to detect colon cancer when we approach a certain age. If found in it’ s early stages, colon cancer can be cured. This is the reason why, doctors advice people over fifty to have colon cancer tests every year.

Another risk factor on the list of factors that we have no control over is family history. If there is colon cancer history in your family, then you are more at risk of developing colon cancer as well. Furthermore, if there is also history of polyps or bowel disease, then that puts you at risk of having colon cancer too. In these cases, doctors usually recommend screening for colon cancer earlier than in other colon cancer risk people.
