Discover the After Effects of Colon Cancer Treatment
There are many ways you can reduce the need for colon cancer treatment, but what happens after you’ve had it? There are several possible side effects that can occur, depending on the type and length of your treatment. Here are just a few:
A main treatment for colon cancer is radiation therapy. Side effects can include skin irritation, fatigue, rectal irritation, sexual difficulties and bladder irritation as well as frequent urges to urinate. These should go away after treatment is concluded. If any of the effects persists, consult your physician
The effects of chemotherapy treatment can include: tiredness, vomiting, skin rashes and sore around the mouth. Other effects can be loss of hair and loss of appetite. Chemotherapy does kill the cancer cells but it also kills immune cells as well, so you will be more susceptible to things like colds and flus, and it may take more time at first to recover from these sicknesses. These side effects can be minimized, but it depends on the amount and type of drugs taken. Most of these side effects will disappear over time once treatment is concluded. Hair grows back, for instance.
After surgery, it is expected that the patient will experience discomfort and some pain. This will be normal as the body is recovering from a very serious ordeal. Pain can be controlled through judicious use of drugs such as morphine. Other post-surgery side effects can include constipation, diarrhea, infection, and bleeding. Pain control can be found through anesthesiologists, psychologists as well as pain specialists. Remember there are many methods to deal with pain, don’t be afraid to seek alternatives.
The after effects of colon cancer treatment can be both mentally tiring as well as psychically uncomfortable, but if yo work with a team, these can be overcome and minimized quickly.
