Having Moderate Exercise to Reduce Side Effects of Cancer Treatment
Most of conventional cancer treatments produce side effects such as hair loss, weight gain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. This is the main reason that some cancer patients looking for alternative cancer treatment which can treat the disease in naturally way and no side effects.
However, some cancer patients still decide to choose conventional cancer treatment as majority of those alternative cancer treatments do not have the scientific backing. Good news to this group of cancer patients is that analyzes of data from published research shows exercise reduced side effects of cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation.
The research concluded that exercise does benefit the physical functions of cancer patients who undergo the conventional cancer treatment. Hence, many doctors now encourage people with cancer to be as active as possible during treatment and recovery.
There may be times when cancer patients don’t feel able to exercise. But the purpose of exercises is to be as active as a cancer patient comfortably can be in order to reduce side effects of cancer treatment like nausea, fatigue and constipation.
According to the research, exercise had the strongest effect on boosting cancer patients’ physical function, such as improving their ability to climb stairs or walk a certain distance. It improved patients’ body composition, increasing the percentage of lean muscle mass to total weight.
Although exercise is benefits to cancer patients and safe for many people there are some exceptions. For example, if a cancer patient is at risk for infection or anemia he may not be able to exercise. This is why consulting a doctor is an important first step.
After the doctor has given green light for a cancer patient to do exercise for reducing side effects of cancer treatment, he might also meet with a physical therapist or another healthcare professional with experience in this area. They can help him develop an exercise program that is safe and effective for him.
