The techniques and knowledge in molecular biology are advancing rapidly. The basic mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of various lung conditions including asthma, COPD and lung cancer are being clarified by the application of this powerful technology. Genetic causes of single gene disorders such as cystic fibrosis and -1 antitrypsin deficiency have now been well delineated. This progress leads to an understanding of the pathogenic process that result in disease. The purpose of Volumes I and II of Molecular Biology of the Lung is to provide an update on the use of this powerful technology. As such, the books provide an insight into the techniques for the non-specialist. Scientists embarking upon studies in chronic lung disease will find a review of the current status of research. At the same time, the books are useful to clinicians, both specialist and academic, and to scientists already involved in the basic aspects of the pathogenesis of lung disease. Both volumes deal with basic mechanisms of cell biology, receptors and cell activation and provides an insight as to how the technology influences our concepts of pathogenesis and vice versa. Volume I focuses on Emphysema and Infection, Volume II focuses on Asthma and Cancer.

Molecular Biology of the Lung: Volume 2: Asthma and Cancer (Respiratory Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy) (v. 2)lung cancer treatment

Two years after Bonnie Borton’s second occurrence of lymphoma, a scan showed some very tiny lesions in her lungs. Borton opted not to have a needle biopsy, a calculated risk that left her not at all surprised when another scan several months later revealed one particularly suspicious tumor. “I knew at the time I was rolling the dice,” she said. And now she was 78, not an age where the body can easily handle the traditional surgical approach to remove tumors from the lung: Long incision, ribs spread, and sometimes broken, muscles split apart, all in a procedure that can mean significant pain and several months of recovery. Borton, however, was offered by her Stanford physicians a minimally invasive option not available until relatively recently, supported by advances in technology and human expertise: a video-assisted lobectomy, or VATS lobectomy. Surgeons would make just three, one to two inch incisions into her torso and, guided by a high grade video camera, remove her tumor. Not only would it be gone, but she’d probably be out of the hospital within a few days and back to her usual activities in a few weeks.

People facing a new diagnosis of cancer are unsettled by their prognosis and treatment options, and they often seek to integrate complementary modalities into their conventional care plan, hoping to improve their chances of cure and decrease side effects. Many do so without informing their oncologist, for fear of alienating them or not convinced that their physician would be informed about complementary therapies. Integrative Oncology, the first volume in the Weil Integrative Medicine Library, provides a wealth of information for both practitioners and consumers on the emerging field of integrative oncology. Noted oncologist Donald Abrams and integrative medicine pioneer Andrew Weil and their international panel of experts present up-to-date and extensively referenced chapters on a wide spectrum of issues and challenges, bound in one comprehensive, reader-friendly text in a format featuring key points, sidebars, tables, and a two-color design for ease of use. It is destined to emerge as the definitive resource in this emerging field.
