Asbestos has been incorporated in many products up to the present time. It can be found in roofing materials, floor tiles, pipe insulation, and cement in order to solidify and strengthen it. Although there were calls to ban the use of asbestos, it would not be totally implemented for many years because of its importance in the industrial and engineering sectors. Most people who have been exposed to asbestos and been given a mesothelioma diagnosis by their physicians are those who have been working in factories dealing with asbestos more directly although the disease process will not be apparent until after twenty years and the first symptoms appear.
Asbestos exposure has been blamed for the increasing number of patients with mesothelioma diagnosis each year. It has been known that asbestos fibers have carcinogenic properties and accumulation of these harmful materials inside the body brought about by frequent exposure can lead to disease. These fibers can lodge in the membranes lining the lungs, heart and/or the abdomen. Their presence causing cellular changes that later on develop the capacity to invade other neighboring organs. The symptoms may vary depending on the location of the tumor, with patients complaints ranging from fever, to breathing problems, to chest pains, and abdominal pains.
Patients should then include their work history when they consult their doctors for symptoms such as coughing, difficulty of breathing, chest wall pain, frequent signs of fatigue, abdominal distention, pallor, pains, fever and sudden weight loss. This would help their doctor consider mesothelioma diagnosis and include it in his diagnostics. An X-ray and a CT scan of the chest and the abdomen would be done, and if a tumor is found and located, a tissue biopsy would be performed to be sent to the laboratory. The pathologist could then delineate the causation of the disease and give the attending physician a definite diagnosis which will help him decide on which treatment protocols would work for his patients.
