Biological therapy is a type of cancer treatment that boosts patients’ immune system to fight cancer cells. It uses natural substances from patients’ body or drug made from these substances. Typically, this treatment can be given as adjuvant therapy to control the side effects of conventional cancer treatment.

cancer treatmentSome patients have doubt about the difference between biological therapy and chemotherapy as they seem alike. However, these two treatments are work in different ways. Biological therapy work with immune system in cancer cure whereby chemotherapy kills cancer cells directly.

Basically, biological therapy is less invasive and less toxic as it boosts patients’ immune system to fight cancer cells. Normally there are three factors to determine whether or not a cancer patient suitable to undergo biological therapy:
• What type of cancer a patient have
• The cancer stage
• What is the treatments the patient have already tired

The following are reasons why the patient has biological therapy:
• Control the growth of cancer cells by stopping the process that changes a normal cell into a cancerous cell
• Make cancer cells more recognizable by body’s immune system
• Increase the killing power of immune system cells
• Slow tumor growth by changing the way cancer cells grow
• Reduce side effects caused by conventional cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation
• Prevent cancer cells from spreading to other parts of the body

However, biological therapy is not without its own side effects. Side effects of this therapy often mimic flu-like symptoms may includes fever, fatigue and chills. Those side effects can vary widely each and every time a patient receive the treatment. Therefore, the patient is advisable to attend all follow-up appointments.
